Let’s finish our tour of the most beautiful castles and forts of Pays d’Issoire with one of the most beautiful villages in France: Montpeyroux.
Located in the heart of the village, the medieval donjon was built following the conquest of Auvergne under Philippe-Auguste. Its geographical position made it possible to ensure the protection of the surrounding small villages. They were thus warned in case of enemy attack, fire, or flooding of the Allier River.
At 33 meters high, the Montpeyroux donjon was the central point of the fortress. Today, its access offers a 360° panoramic view from the top of the platform. This type of cylindrical tower appeared in France as early as the end of the 12th century.
